DAVIDSON SHIELD
Manjimup Rifle Range - 21 May
Gales, thunderstorms and possible hail were all forecast for the day of the Davidson Shield. As a result, the normal program of 7 shots over 300, 500 and 600 yards was amended so that the course of fire became 10 shots at 500yds and 11 shots at 600 yds.
Fortunately, the wild weather failed to materialise, and the day's shooting was conducted under relatively benign conditions with just the few and short-lived light showers. However, the temperature on the firing point hovered around the 8-10C for the whole of the day, making Manjimup Club's enormous camp fire a most welcome retreat from the cold and a natural gathering point before, during lunch and for the presentations.

According to form, and on cue, the Manjimup team got away to a commanding lead at the 500 yd stage, only dropping three points from a possible 250. Only three possible 50's were scored at the 500 - all from Manjimup with Mark Milentis leading the way with 50.8. Close behind were follow team mates Mick Forsberg with 50.7 and Bo Larsen with a creditable 50.5.
Bunbury and Busselton's hopes of making up any leeway at the 11 shot 600 yd stage were dashed by Manjimup who mastered the variable frontal wind and changing light to establish an unbeatable lead with a stage score of 263.17 from a possible 275.
Manjimup's Alan Trease scored a handy possible of 55.6 at this range - the only shooter to do so.
In total Manjimup scored 510.46 off rifle. Bunbury managed second place in both stages and finished with a total off rifle score of 487.30, followed by Busselton Red on 463.14.
An unknown quantity in the match's results was the absence of the upcoming Darkan team, whose members reluctantly forfeited the shoot as seeding duties took precedence and kept them away.
The Davidson Shield, based on Handicap scores was won by Manjimup with a handicap score of 525, followed by Bunbury on 508 and Busselton with 496.
