Lt BUNBURY CHALLENGE CUP
2014
The Lieutenant Bunbury Cup is an historic trophy, which was presented to the Bunbury Rifle Club in 1936 to commemorate the Centenary of Lieutenant H.W. St Pierre Bunbury's exploratory expedition from Pinjarra south to the Vasse, during which time he explored and mapped the area, including the rivers, which he named along the way.
Sir James Stirling, having decided to form a military post in the Busselton district, sent Bunbury down in charge. Later when the township of Bunbury was formed, Stirling named it after him. Bunbury left Western Australia in November 1837. Since 1951 the Cup has been put forward for annual competition between the the Murray and South West DRAs, being shot for at the SWDRA's headquarters range, Coolilup. The .925 Sterling Silver cup was restored in 1980 by Bunbury RC member, Dick Davidson |
The inscription on the Cup reads: THE "BUNBURY" CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTED BY THE SURVIVING SONS AND GRANDSONS OF LIEUT. H.W. St. P BUNBURY (21st REGT) 1836 - 1936 In the 34 years of competition to date, the cup has been won by the MDRA a total of 25 times, and the SWDRA 39 times. Photo and article by G. Wittorff (SWDRA) |

F Class Competition
While the Lieut Bunbury is a TR competition between the SW and Murray Associaitons, a number of South West F Class marksmen availed themselves of the opportunity to hone their team skills by forming a couple of teams to compete against each other on the day. To extend the chance of team shooting, a number of F Class shooters from surrounding clubs also attended, and made up the third team for the day's competition.
Busselton 2 took the lead after the 300m, scoring 290/300, 5 points clear of Busselton 1 and 10 ahead of Visitors. Fortunes changed dramatically during the 500m. Busselton 1 finished that range down only 7 points, while Visitors remained consistent, dropping 10. Busselton 2's 272.21 meant that an exception result was needed at the final 600m. This was not to be, and Busselton 1 cemented their lead with a 287.13 at the 600m, taking to day's aggregate to 865.54, 21 points in front of the Visitors with Busselton 2 a further 7 points behind.
G Oates topped the day with 178.15, but only 3 X's in front of R LeMay from Busselton 2.
