SCOTT SHIELD
29th June 2014
Leaden skies and cold breezes were the order of the day during the firing of the Scott Shield at Cooliliup on Sunday, 29th June. The Scott Shield is the third stage of the South West DRA's inter club teams competition and is hosted by Bunbury Rifle Club.
Due to members' ill health and commitments, Busselton was unable to field a team, however a composite team was able to be assembled with a couple of shooters being placed on loan from Bunbury.
Shot over 500, 600 and 700m, both shooters and coaches were able to make good use of the benign conditions and some excellent scores were posted on each of the ranges. Each range was dominated by the inform and strong Manjimup team, who led by 2 points after the 500m, 3 points after the 600m and extending their over all off rifle lead to six points after the 700m, having finished that range clean with a score of 175.20.
Second off rifle was the composite Busselton side on a score of 510.46, five centre bulls eyes ahead of Bunbury, with Darkan running fourth on 504.48. Reflective of the good conditions is the fact that 16 of the 19 team members scored 100 or higher while 16 competitors equalled or bettered their individual team shooting handicap.
Top performances were put in by Manjimup's Mark Milentis on 105.15 and Mick Forsberg with 105.14. Busselton's Steve Wdowinski was top Handicap scorer with a whopping 109, breaking his previous handicap by 4 points.
The highest Off Rifle Team score was shot by Manjimup, with 516.61.
Busselton's composite team scored highly in the Handicap section, but was not eligible to take off the shoot due to insufficient home team members. This left Manjimup and Bunbury with Handicap scores of 525 or greater. When this occurs, each team's final range score has two thirds of the team's handicap added to determine the winning team. Our intrepid handicapper performed this operation, and the final result fell Bunbury's way.
The Scott Shield therefore went to the Bunbury team.
F Class shooters joined the teams on the mound, and while not competing in the Scott Shield, availed themselves of the excellent conditions by posting some creditable scores. Graham Oates topped the F Std with 177.14; Linda Shehan represented F TR and scored 172.10, while Brad Yates put in a very hot 180.23 to show the way in F Open.
