SPENCER SHIELD
Darkan Range - 5th May
MCSI SYSTEM
Apart from being the first of the SWDRA's inter-club team shoots for the year, the Spencer Shield was the first SWDRA Inter Club Teams to be scored under the MCSI system.
What is the MCSI system? The acronym stands for "Mixed Category Score Index". It is a scoring system, developed in Australia, and it is used to allow different full bore disciplines to compete directly with each other by converting scores from TR, F/Std, F Open, F/TR to a common score index, regardless of discipline.
The MSCI system available was developed in 2014, and based on Queens scores at that time. Since then, there has been an increase in the scores available, particularly for F Open and F/TR. Our resident handicapper and statistician has analysed the tables, and tweaked them to ensure they now reflect a more accurate comparative index than the original.
It is also worth noting that at the 2018 WARA Queens, the Ray Miles teams shoots was opened up to mixed discipline teams, and the MCSI system was used to determine the outcome. It was also used at the SWDRA's Easter OPM for the DRA teams event.
The Spencer Shield
The Spencer Shield took place at the Darkan Range on 5th May with Manjimup, Bunbury, Busselton and host team Darkan taking part. Although dry weather prevailed for the day, scudding clouds, accompanied by blustery winds, predominantly down-range, veering over the right shoulder prevailed all day, giving wind coaches some grief at time, especially at the 600 yd stage.
It was Manjimup's day from the start, racing out of the blocks at the 300yds, with a MCSI score of 382.663. Second was Bunbury with 308.338. 500yds saw Manjimup come back to the field slightly, scoring 329.657, with Bunbury on 309.35. Busselton and Darkan followed in that order. The day's outcome was sealed at the 600yd, with Manjimup topping the range with a MCSI score of 308.358. Darkan improved their standing by scoring a creditable 302.271 for a second placing with Bunbury and Busselton following.
The final outcome was that the Spencer Shield was clearly won by the Manjimup team with a MSCI Handicap Aggregate of 973.557, followed by Bunbury on 946.855, then Darkan 939.785 and Busselton 934.407. Manjimup also took out Off Rifle honours with a score of 959.557, followed by Bunbury 913.854, Darkan 904.784 and Busselton 888.407.
The coached individual top off rifle score went to Manjimup's Mick Forsberg, as did the MCSI handicapped rankings.
