SPENCER SHIELD
Darkan Range 8th March
The South West DRA's 2015 Inter-club competition opened at the Darkan Rifle Range with the shooting of the Spencer Shield over 300, 500 and 600 yards.
Despite weeks of hot weather, the skies over the Darkan Range were overcast and leaden for all of the morning's shooting, with a fresh breeze with a touch of chill in it. By the lunch break, the cloud had dissipated and the rest of the day was conducted under blue skies.
As is often the case at the Darkan Range, conditions were not easy. Sighting was an issue in the morning, coupled with periods of gusting breezes for the first two ranges, and then just plain difficult conditions prevailed for the final 600 yard stage.
Both Bunbury and Manjimup teams were unable to field a full five-shooter team, and were reduced to using the averaging formula which enables the handicapper to insert a "ghost" score, which is in fact the average for each range of the four available shooters. On the other hand, both Busselton and Darkan faced the firing line with a full five man team, plus an additional partial team, which while not having sufficient scores to make a competitive team, allowed newer shooters the opportunity to compete in a teams event, and of course having their scores recorded in the register.
The strong Manjimup team continued last year's form, topping the scoring for the 300yds and 500 yds, although Busselton Red matched Manjimup's score of 165 at the 500, just two centre bulls short of the Manjimup score. Manjimup extended their lead at the 600yds, thus taking out the top off rifle team score for the day.
As mentioned, conditions were challenging, as shown by the absence of a 105 possible on the day. Top off rifle scores were Mick Forsberg (103.11) Rod Davis (103.06) .
However the Handicap Spencer Shield was won by a well balanced Busselton Red team.
This balance was evidenced by the fact that the top three individual handicap scores were gained by three Busselton members; Steve Wdowinksi (107), Voytek Koslowski (106) scoring top and second top individual handicap score for the day while Rod Davis's score of 105 gave him third handicap place.
