EASTER PRIZE MEETING - 2017
The 2017 Easter SWDRA Easter Prize Meeting was attended by 50 marksmen and women from clubs across the state, ranging from Karratha, Leonora and Esperance and points in-between. This weekend marked the resumption of this competition following a two year hiatus due to stop butt repairs. The weekend's shooting comprised the shooting of the Coolilup Cup, a one day competition over 3 ranges followed by the South West DRA Open Championships over two days.
Coolilup Cup
Shot over 300, 500 and 600m, in fine but cloudy conditions this year's Cup was won by multiple former winner, John Moore from Leonora, followed one point behind by TR shooter Mark Milentis of Manjimup. Busselton's Graham Oates took out the F Standard division, just 4 'X's in front of Mal Hamilton of South Perth. F Open was won by Busselton shooter Brad Yates, a clear point ahead of Boddington's Bob Kinnear.

SOUTH WEST DRA OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
&
SERVICE RIFLE
The South West DRA Open Championships is a two day event, fired over all distances from 300m - 900m. Visitors to the range would have noticed the warm and sunny skies accompanied by a pleasant light breeze. While these seemingly benign conditions appeared conducive to good shooting conditions, it was clear to the shooters on the mound that there was a very tricky mirage showing through the spotting scopes and telescopic sights. These conditions tended to intensify as the day moved on, resulting in the mirage moving from left to right, right to left and boiling - all in no particular order, causing all shooters to attempt to read the conditions carefully and trust their judgement.
Not surprisingly, there were many frustrated and disappointed shooters over the two days. Of course, the top scorers tended to be the more able conditions readers who were also able to get shots away quickly in order to avoid changing mirage.
Day one aggregate top scorers were: Target Rifle: John Moore, who scored the maximum of 200, with 22 centre bulls eyes. Division 2 winner for the day was Tony Schlink on 195.13 and Division 3 Graeme Turner with 195.17. F Class: Standard A saw Mal Hamilton lead with a creditable 236.20, with Standard B seeing new comer Anthony Penny from Darling Range shoot a score of 235.16. Wily Bob Kinnear top scored for F Open with a hit of 238.20.
Day two's conditions carried on from the Saturday, making the long ranges of 700, 800 and 900m testing, to say the least.
John Moore, once again showed his prowess in testing conditions to win the day for Target Rifle, dropping just two points at the 900m, scoring a daily aggregate of 148.11. Division Two was won by Kerry Samuel with 140.9 and Division Three by Colin Dods on 145.12. In F Standard, A group's top scorer for the day was Graham Oates on 171.11, with B group top scorer being Anthony Penny, scoring 168.11. Rod Rees took honours for F Open with 176.13.
The final outcome saw the following shooters as winners for the SWDRA Open Prize Meeting.
Target Rifle: John Moore of Leonora: 348.33

Life Membership Awards
Following the Daily Aggregate presentations on Saturday, SWDRA Life Membership Awards were presented to Ken Sue and Dave Basten, both of the Busselton Club. Both men have made major contributions to the South West Association and their award was richly deserved. Keith Sadler and Rod Davis both made short speeches paying tribute to Ken and Dave. In addition, Ken Sue received his WARA 50 Years Membership Certificate.

Service Rifle
The SWDRA has a strong and regular Service Rifle competition throughout the year, and it has been the custom over the last six or so years to incorporate a Service Rifle Championship within the Easter Prize Meeting. This is achieved by having the Service Rifle shoot on the Friday's Coolilup Cup shoot over 300, 500 and 600 metres, and then again on the first day of the SWDRA Championships over 300, 400, 500 and 600m.
Eight competitors fronted for this competition, and it is gratifying to see shooters who enjoy shooting unmodified service rifles over the short ranges.
The first day's competition was won by Frank Kocsis with a score of 141.11, followed by Jack Nixon with 138.9. Day two belonged to Jack Nixon who came home on a 182.8, followed by Julien Davey with 177.6.
The overall placing for the SWDRA Service Rifle Championships were: Jack Nixon 320.17, Frank Kocsis 313.21 with Julien Davey third with a score of 301.12.
Service Rifle Winner: Jack Nixon 320.17
