SPENCER SHIELD and ZONE CUP - 2014
DARKAN RANGE
The 2014 South West DRA Target Rifle Teams competition got under way at the Darkan Rifle Range on 9th March, when the combined competition of the Spencer Shield and Annual Zone Cup was shot.
Due to a couple of contributing factors neither Manjimup nor Bunbury were able to field enough shooters to qualify for the Zone Cup. Nevertheless, there were sufficient shooters in attendance for all four SWDRA Clubs to compete for the Spencer Shield.
Conditions on the day were decidedly cooler than recent days due to a south westerly wind over the ground and intermittent cloud above. The 300 yd match proved to be the most difficult with a fresh breeze that blew across the range from 2 o'clock, then strengthening and swinging to 3 o'clock. Coaches were generally tested, however Manjimup managed to dope the wind sufficiently to finish the range only two points down, with Mark Milentis topping the range with a handy 35.6.
The 500 yd match was shot under pretty much the same conditions, with the result that scores were slightly higher, as often happens at this distance. Manjimup charged further ahead, finishing the range clear, with a team score of 175.18, four point clear of the next best, Bunbury Blue on 171.13. Darkan's Rob Cuthbert shared top score for the 500 yds with Mark Milentis, both with 35.5.
600 yds proved to be deceptively tricky, with a steady wind blowing across the range from 2 o'clock, punctuated with sudden changes of wind from the opposite side of the centre line. Alert coaches picked up most of these changes, but due to their sudden nature and relatively short lived appearance, there were a number of close 9 or 3 o'clock inners appearing. Again, Manjimup outscored the others with 165.11, but only one point ahead of Bunbury Blue.
